Is repentance and confession enough to cleanse the sins?

Only atonement for sins can cleanse the sins. One has to atone for one's sins through various births and life times, only then can they be cleansed. Repentance and confession can act as an honest admission of sin but does not mean that the sins are cleansed by mere admitting and confessing. Is repentance and confession enough to cleanse the sins?
Yes, because you must remember that Jesus did die for our sins also.Is repentance and confession enough to cleanse the sins?
this iniquity shall not be purged from you till ye die, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.
No penance is required and the best penance for this age is to chant the holy names of God also known as Krishna Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, Rama, Hari, etc. We still may get some reaction for our sins but it will be adjusted by God for what every lesson we need to learn in our mistake. It is not so cut and dry like some so called religions think. Karma (reaction to ones actions is a very complex matter but we need to chant the holy names that is the most important to cleans all sins and clear all the cobwebs. If one is interested, writ me for a direct link to how to chant the holy names. Thanks.
My view on this is:

Confession is the first stage where a person realises that they have done a Sin. However this alone does not cleanses the Sin. This gives way birth to a feeling of repentance this however is resposible to clean the Sin completely.

If the Sin has been commited against a person who is still alive and if they forgive then I believe the sin has been cleansed.

If the Sin has been done against a person who is no more in the material world then there is no way of getting a forgiveness from them. In that case repentence needs to be directed to the Lord as he is the ultimate forgiver.

Christ has beautifully spoken about this in New testament and also I have experience of reading the same in other Holy scriptures of other religions as well.

Regards
It's a start. When you consciously recognize a sin before committing it and stop yourself from committing it; you are walking with the Holy Spirit. When you walk with the Holy Spirit and commit a sin and walk with fear of God in your heart that's a sure sign that God is speaking to you. God is merciful and good, because He always gives us the chance to repent.

GOD BLESS! AMEN! SHALOM!
It will give an opportunity to start sins anew .sins are not the same for all people .what is sin in one culture is not a sin in another. However the common trait of a sin is that it is prohibited by the society .since certain religions provide for pardon if confessed , it has removed the fear of people against the commission of sins and they can secure pardon.

but action has its reaction.action is held to be a karma .We are answerable for all our actions.Every one is sure to reap the consequences of his action and every action has its consequence or reaction. This is scientifically true .

Whether the confession cleanse the sins or not , the belief that it does , gives some consolation to the perturbed mind of the the sinner if he believes hat his sins would be wiped out ..So the concept offers some relief to those who make the confessions
Praise be to Allaah.

Whoever repents, Allaah will turn to him in acceptance. Whoever seeks to draw closer to Allaah, Allaah will draw closer to him. As you have been guided and have returned to Islam and turned to Allaah, then rejoice in the news that Allaah has accepted your repentance and forgiven you. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

';And verily, I am indeed Forgiving to him who repents, believes (in My Oneness, and associates none in worship with Me) and does righteous good deeds, and then remains constant in doing them, (till his death).'; [Ta-Ha 20:82]

Saying of the last prophet

O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O

son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O

son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner

to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great at it.
Confession: of sin will get you into this dliemna:

Bloodshed covers ';almost all'; (not all) sins;

Sacrifice doesn't purge the conscience.

As is noted for us by Paul in Hebrews 9.

Repentance: speaks of a chanGe, of a conversion,

from law imputing sin to grace doesn't law impute sin.

That God, in Christ: did not impute sin to them: 2Cor5:19.

For sin, when it is finished, brings forth death: James 1:15.

Repentance + Confession is as

Saved + Destroyed afterward: Jude 1:5.

So then, God will have all men to repent; But

Confession is a johnny law thing in 2Pet2:22;

A latter end worse to a void, not a law to repeat.

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.
No, one must also live the life that is good for them.
No repentance and confession will only clears ones mind, and helps to get rid of burden at mental level only! For sure, good and bad Karmas will give us good and bad situations.
Nowhere in OUR INSTRUCTIONS for today , are we told to repent and confess sins in order to be forgiven. That was Israels instruction as she didnt acknowledge her King and prophesied Messiah.

WE are told to believe in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ as sufficient payment to reconcile us to God and we have been GIVEN a ministry of reconciliation as members of His Body. See 1 Cor. 15:1-4

It is NOT what WE do that saves anyone, but what HE DID!

No one was repenting OR confessing their sins when Christ died for them two thousand years ago! The Bible tells us that ';while we were YET SINNERS, Christ died for us';.

The blood of Christ is the ONLY thing that will cleanse a person from all sin, and that happened two thousand years ago. ';There is NO forgiveness without the shedding of blood.';

Jesus tells us that His blood sacrifice paid for the sins of the WORLD, that it took AWAY all sins once and for all, and that the penalty and power of sin has been dealt with. The PRESENCE Of sin wont be taken care of til we get our new bodies, but God no longer deals with anyone on the basis of their SIN, but on the basis of BELIEF and trust in the sin BEARER.

Do we really BELIEVE that God took care of each and every sin on the Cross? If He didnt, then He wouldnt have risen from the dead, and we would all have to worry about the sin issue.

All your sins were future when He paid for them 2000 yrs ago! The blood cleansed ALL sin for all time for ALL people.

Now the issue is...will you take God at His Word??? Believe that what He did was sufficient, and you will be saved.

Again, Its NOT what WE do that saves us, but believing in what HE DID...';without faith it is impossible to please God.';
sackcloth and ash

flagellation
No. People have repented %26amp; confessed to man many times %26amp; it didn't do any good.

One has to also have an honest heart to God. 1. Confess Jesus Christ their Lord with their mouth. 2. Believe in their heart He raised from the dead.

Confess with their mouth unto salvation. Yeshua means 'He shall save'. So Confess Jesus Christ ones Lord unto Salvation (to God %26amp; not for man). Believing in ones heart (true faith). Faith is to trust %26amp; obey God. You trust God's Word (Holy Bible) is true. You obey Gods Word (You receive Jesus atonement for your sins).

See the act of faith is also receiving Gods atonement for your sins. If you don't receive Jesus (and what Jesus did) by acting out in faith. Confessing %26amp; reaching to God / being water baptized, then you haven't received Gods Gift.

Jesus shed blood is for the remission of our sins. His blood won't cleanse us if we don't receive Him in faith (by an act of faith).

Isaiah53. He suffered our sins on the cross. He was bruised for us. He died for us. He gave His life a ransom for many. Since He was without sin, He raised from the dead victoryious over death %26amp; the grave for us.

Once we are born again, cleansed by His blood, joint heirs with King Jesus, made part of the family of God; then we will sin again (accidently even, or on purpose), but since we are sealed of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit convicts our newborn spirit. So we regularily confess our sin, %26amp; He (Jesus) is faithful %26amp; just to forgive us our sin %26amp; cleanse us from all unrighteousness. See? We are saved daily this way. We already have eternal life received when we were born of God, Gods Way. But we need to be saved from conscequences of wrong decisions today. And to save to for ourselves eternal rewards.

You can test yourself. You can look up %26amp; praise God That Jesus Christ is your Lord (confess this out loud to God) and your Savior. That Jesus did this for you %26amp; you have received it. If you can say this out loud to God %26amp; in love %26amp; thanksgiving from your heart. Well? You can only do this honestly by the grace of the Holy Spirit of the Holy Bible. If you can't do this, then you still need salvation. You are in a pre salvation state, not yet born of God.

Jesus shed blood covers all your sins; past, present %26amp; future. When you are made Gods Child through faith in Jesus, then your have eternal life within you. This is 'The Kingdom of God is within.'. Your new born spirit blends with your soul %26amp; has saved your soul.

But your body is still corruptible. So? We need to trust %26amp; obey God. Renewing our minds in Gods Truth %26amp; Gods Spirit. Faith comes by hearing %26amp; hearing a Word about Christ / God. And we need to not listen to our flesh when it is wrong. Die to the lust of the flesh (not reacting by yelling, cussing, etc...) %26amp; make the soul choice to follow after the Spirit (faith, hope, love, joy, peace, patience, honesty, truth, etc...) The Holy Spirit won't force us. We have to make the soul choice. And this saves our souls from conscequences of wrong decisions today. God would have us be in health %26amp; prosper even as our soul prospers. Our soul prospers when we feed our souls with Gods Truth. The Truth sets us free from bondages of deception.

This is daily abiding in Christ %26amp; maturing in Christ unto the day we stand whole before Him: body, soul %26amp; spirit; blameless %26amp; in love.

Yes, if we try to abide in sin that God convicts us in, there will be discipline %26amp; sometimes it is harsh discipline.

GodShew's answer is wrong. He has devalued the work done on the cross. (That is a dangerous thing to do) And He thinks that works (or being good enouph) then save you. (This is falling from grace) He needs to repent %26amp; realize that he is saved %26amp; all his sins are covered by Jesus Christ shed blood also.

sheik jafar thinks that you need to deny Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God to get forgiveness. He is as far from the Truth as darkness is to light.
1 John 1:9; ' ... If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness'.
NO.

The only way to be forgiven of your sins is to believe that Jesus, who is God, died for our sins on the cross and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

Confessing your sins to Jesus is in line with this.
It's the Blood of Jesus that cleanses you of your sins.

Confessions of sins to Jesus (%26amp; not to any mere man, mind you) is the FIRST STEP.

Next, repentance means, ';a turning away from'; that sin. This means ';Go and SIN NO MORE';!

Thirdly, to show your sincerity before God you will have to bear 'the fruit of repentance,' meaning... have you taken action on it, %26amp; have stopped sinning?
Gods word never changes....Old Testament.

Forgiveness is subject to the confessing to the offended party and making restitution.

The catholic church changed gods word so that they could keep a close watch on what people were doing.

Don`t be fooled by catholic lies..!!
no not at all but not to repeat the saema nd be always sorry for that may improve something
Dear anil. m,

If a person TRULY repents of their sins (and turns to God through what Jesus has done on the cross), he/she can be saved and cleansed from their sins.

For a brief explanation of the gospel (of salvation through Jesus Christ), see http://www.godsci.org/gs/new/essence.html
depends on WHO you are doing the repentance and confession for. If God is not the center of it then His son can't forgive or cleanse the sin you are seeking to overcome.
Preventions is better than cure.

Nothing is better than nonsense.
it all depends on how you live your life afterwards.
Repentance, confession and never do it again. Jesus used to say ';go and sin no more';. It is hard, though. We all have our weaknesses and even knowing that something is wrong, we tend to persist doing it. That is our mission and that's where we learn. When we overcome our own weaknesses. We need Jesus so bad to help us!

Peace!
Well....Contrition and Absolution are also necessary, technically speaking, but - you are basically correct..

Holy Scripture is clear:

John 20:21 - before He grants them the authority to forgive sins, Jesus says to the apostles, ';as the Father sent me, so I send you.'; As Christ was sent by the Father to forgive sins, so Christ sends the apostles and their successors forgive sins.

John 20:22 - the Lord ';breathes'; on the apostles, and then gives them the power to forgive and retain sins. The only other moment in Scripture where God breathes on man is in Gen. 2:7, when the Lord ';breathes'; divine life into man. When this happens, a significant transformation takes place.

John 20:23 - Jesus says, ';If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven. If you retain the sins of any, they are retained.'; In order for the apostles to exercise this gift of forgiving sins, the penitents must orally confess their sins to them because the apostles are not mind readers. The text makes this very clear.

Matt. 9:8 - this verse shows that God has given the authority to forgive sins to ';men.'; Hence, those Protestants who acknowledge that the apostles had the authority to forgive sins (which this verse demonstrates) must prove that this gift ended with the apostles. Otherwise, the apostles' successors still possess this gift. Where in Scripture is the gift of authority to forgive sins taken away from the apostles or their successors?

Matt. 9:6; Mark 2:10 - Christ forgave sins as a man (not God) to convince us that the ';Son of man'; has authority to forgive sins on earth.

Luke 5:24 - Luke also points out that Jesus' authority to forgive sins is as a man, not God. The Gospel writers record this to convince us that God has given this authority to men. This authority has been transferred from Christ to the apostles and their successors.

Matt. 18:18 - the apostles are given authority to bind and loose. The authority to bind and loose includes administering and removing the temporal penalties due to sin. The Jews understood this since the birth of the Church.

John 20:22-23; Matt. 18:18 - the power to remit/retain sin is also the power to remit/retain punishment due to sin. If Christ's ministers can forgive the eternal penalty of sin, they can certainly remit the temporal penalty of sin (which is called an ';indulgence';).

2 Cor. 2:10 - Paul forgives in the presence of Christ (some translations refer to the presences of Christ as ';in persona Christi';). Some say that this may also be a reference to sins.

2 Cor. 5:18 - the ministry of reconciliation was given to the ambassadors of the Church. This ministry of reconciliation refers to the sacrament of reconciliation, also called the sacrament of confession or penance.

James 5:15-16 - in verse 15 we see that sins are forgiven by the priests in the sacrament of the sick. This is another example of man's authority to forgive sins on earth. Then in verse 16, James says “Therefore, confess our sins to one another,” in reference to the men referred to in verse 15, the priests of the Church.

1 Tim. 2:5 - Christ is the only mediator, but He was free to decide how His mediation would be applied to us. The Lord chose to use priests of God to carry out His work of forgiveness.

Lev. 5:4-6; 19:21-22 - even under the Old Covenant, God used priests to forgive and atone for the sins of others.

James 5:16 - James clearly teaches us that we must “confess our sins to one another,” not just privately to God. James 5:16 must be read in the context of James 5:14-15, which is referring to the healing power (both physical and spiritual) of the priests of the Church. Hence, when James says “therefore” in verse 16, he must be referring to the men he was writing about in verses 14 and 15 – these men are the ordained priests of the Church, to whom we must confess our sins.

Acts 19:18 - many came to orally confess sins and divulge their sinful practices. Oral confession was the practice of the early Church just as it is today.

Matt. 3:6; Mark 1:5 - again, this shows people confessing their sins before others as an historical practice (here to John the Baptist).

1 Tim. 6:12 - this verse also refers to the historical practice of confessing both faith and sins in the presence of many witnesses.

1 John 1:9 - if we confess are sins, God is faithful to us and forgives us and cleanse us. But we must confess our sins to one another.

Num. 5:7 - this shows the historical practice of publicly confessing sins, and making public restitution.

2 Sam. 12:14 - even though the sin is forgiven, there is punishment due for the forgiven sin. David is forgiven but his child was still taken (the consequence of his sin).

Neh. 9:2-3 - the Israelites stood before the assembly and confessed sins publicly and interceded for each other.

Sir. 4:26 - God tells us not to be ashamed to confess our sins, and not to try to stop the current of a river. Anyone who has experienced the sacrament of reconciliation understands the import of this verse.

Baruch 1:14 - again, this shows that the people made confession in the house of the Lord, before the assembly.

1 John 5:16-17; Luke 12:47-48 - there is a distinction between mortal and venial sins. This has been the teaching of the Catholic Church for 2,000 years, but, today, most Protestants no longer agree that there is such a distinction. Mortal sins lead to death and must be absolved in the sacrament of reconciliation. Venial sins do not have to be confessed to a priest, but the pious Catholic practice is to do so in order to advance in our journey to holiness.

Matt. 5:19 - Jesus teaches that breaking the least of commandments is venial sin (the person is still saved but is least in the kingdom), versus mortal sin (the person is not saved).
No, you need to top it off with forgiveness of others and faith.
No, Jesus makes forgiveness complete with His Word.
no, not enough
Depends on whom u ask. Most Christans are led to believe that every thing will be forgiven by just asking to be forgiven in the name of Jesus!

This has led to tremendous moral decline in spite of great advancement in otherwise intelligent western world.

This business of so called forgiveness is overplayed because Hiarcy in Christanity want to remain in power by supplying music to the ears of their following. Loonies in Christanity think they have it made and are in a win win situation. I just read other answer from a Muslim . If there is any merit and is not out of context, then they too seem to be completely forgiven just for asking!
Christians need a lot more than repentance and confession to cleanse the sins they have committed against humanity.
